Ps: There may be a little giveaway surprise at the end of this post for two lucky readers!
- Small town girl.
- Mom to toddler Ben, the coolest kid in town.
- I am a bit of a jack of all trades ,but master of none.
- I love writing, reading, crafting and eating tons of chocolate.
- I turn into Chandler Bing in awkward situations.
- In my next life I’d like to be a trust fund kid with my own island.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME YAY KIDS?
It took me forever to pick a name for my business. I realized that I said ‘Yay’ a lot, so much so that it was one of Ben’s first words that he spoke. It’s a word I associate with fun times, and when something cool or exciting happens. It’s easy to say, and it was just perfect for what I had in mind for the brand.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND?
Modern and fun.
WHAT ENCOURAGED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
For the past two years I have been doing contract work. I’ll often work for four to five months and then have two or three months at home between contracts. I felt like I needed to use that time productively. I am also a very creative person stuck in mostly admin orientated jobs, so I needed a project where I could be creative. I wanted to create something that was mine, something that I would be proud of.
WHAT PRO’S AND CONS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED THUS FAR?
PRO’S – Putting your energy and time into something that is yours. Being your own boss and playing by your own rules. It’s the best feeling looking at something that you designed and created from the beginning through to the end. And then when people actually love it and buy it, well that’s pretty fabulous too!
CON’S – It’s not exactly a stable income, you never know how the month will go. All the stress, worry and responsibilities are on you. There’s no eight to five workday. I’ve spent many weekends and nights working till midnight trying to get orders out on time. When you get stuck, or don’t know how to proceed there’s no company policy to follow or boss to ask for advice.
WHO INSPIRES YOU CREATIVELY?
I love the Zana girls. I think what they do with their brand is pretty amazing. They are fun, creative, driven and have a very specific brand image.
WHAT VALUABLE LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNT SO FAR?
Planning is good but sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and just do it. I’ve learnt to manage my people pleasing nature better, because when you run a business you can’t just give everything away for free. You have to value your time and your product.
ADVICE FOR FELLOW ENTREPRENEURS
As a “momtrepreneur” I think it’s important to ask yourself the question: As a family will we be able to handle the extra pressure, and is it worth it? It’s crucial to have a good support system because there will be times where you go into full on panic mode, and get completely overwhelmed. Then it’s always good to have an understanding partner that can maybe take on a few extra duties at home while you sort your stuff out. Good time management is very important , and of course lots of coffee.
