The title of this Online Honesty post may sound a bit dramatic, and yes it is way too long for a Blogpost title. But this is my blog, ha, and I can break the rules as I see fit. WHY, the long laborious title for this post? Well, truth be told, the internet has lost its mind somewhat. As I mentioned in a previous Online Honesty post regarding the very ‘interesting’ character types you find online, it’s clear as day that the internet with all of its beauty, resource, and enlightening information that it contains – there lives the crazy too.

I call this the black hole of ‘useless-sensationalized-information’ that sucks you into its vortex and leaves you feeling: confused, emotionally charged and despondent, through to thinking and imagining that you could possibly be dying, or not living the perfect ‘Instagram life’…

THE POWER OF THE WEB

Yes, we all know that we live in the digital era (insert crazy techno beats) along with information overload, where everyone is a ‘so called’ expert in everything, and feels justified to share their opinions, if not bully you into following and believing their opinion. I know of many people who feel more lost, uninspired, and ill equipped due to not knowing how to filter through the things that they: see, read, or interact with online. Which in turn steals their joy, their confidence, and it somehow influences and encourages negative ways of thinking and feeling.

The internet along with social media is very powerful, and because *most of us* have access to it, and engage with it – we sometimes don’t realise what we are encouraging within in our own lives through to the lives of those online.

FILTER THE CRAZY

Part of my freelance work requires me to create content for online magazines. Which means I need to research and read through loads of articles and resource found online. Which also means that I need to filter through some ridiculous crazy articles in order to find the gems and golden nuggets in-between the hot mess. The internet along with the *wonderful* people in it wants to feed us with endless information, whether its useful, or a bag of poo – it’s out there.

But how do we navigate through all of it without it consuming us or leaving us to feel less than?

The reason why I ask, is because the internet and social media should never consume us to such a point that we seek its approval, affirmation, through to feeling like our lives suck in comparison to what we read or see online. Yes, the internet is filled with people that possibly fabricate lifestyles, through to those who overshare, through to selfish self consumed beings, to those that are genuine and inspiring beams of light!

However, we need to know how to navigate and sift through ALL of it (Social media, internet articles, sensationalized online threads, dealing with online haters and stalkers, through to those crazy Facebook page groups.etc) without it negatively effecting us.

HACK THE SYSTEM BY HACKING YOUR SOUL

You are way more important than any amount of likes, comments, 0r followers out there on the inter webs . If Social Media controls you to a point where you are absolutely neurotic and overly obsessed about “following, comments, and engagement” and you spend FAR TOO many hours on it – then maybe it’s become a little bit of an unhealthy habit within your life.

Instead of getting lost online, rather take time out to nurture your soul, and feed it with things that will nourish you; body, mind, and soul. Who you are without Social media is special, beautiful, unique, a work of art, and a masterpiece in the making. Why waste time being consumed by something that will never truly fulfill or add anything into the heart and soul of who you are?

Express yourself online, be creative and have fun with it, but never let it control you. You’re not an app or another tech device that can be switched on or off with a flick of a switch. You are human, with a heart and soul. Look after yourself, especially in this awesome-yet crazy tech-age world that we are living in!
